Grevillea Robusta #9
By Sheena Mathieson
500 mm x 700 mm framed
Sheena Mathieson is a visual artist living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Her artwork explores the world around us through colour, shape and where possible, the use of preloved surfaces and materials. Recurrent themes include shape, colour, the human, natural form and spirit and our tenuous relationship with the environment. All of Sheena’s works have a strong physical presence.
The Grevillea Robusta (Silky Oak) is a fast-growing upright evergreen tree that happens to have set up home in our back yard. Grevillea Robusta resembles a grand pine tree when fully grown. It produces long bottlebrush shaped golden-orange flowers in spring and summer. It was Sheena’s father’s favourite tree. In severely pruning her backyard Grevillea Robusta last month Sheena took one of the cut branches, inked it up and printed it. She also completed a rapid drawing which became the start of the Grevillea Robusta range of monotypes.
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print that exists in its own 'unique state'. Monotypes are prized because of their unique qualities. Sheena makes her monotypes using a large press at her home-studio in North Fitzroy. Grevillea Robusta #9 is a monotype printed in 2021 on 220gsm Fabriano Rosapina paper measuring 50 x 70 cm. It is poster-like, vibrant, authentic and completely unique – only one of its type. You can display this work in a range of ways – framed, unframed using tacks, poster hangars. Your choice!
